Sep 18, 2013 - A group of 65 firms and associations from Europe is calling on the European Union (EU) to formulate clear goals and policies regarding energy and climate to 2030, including legally binding renewable energy targets.
In a letter dated September 17 to the Ministers for Energy, Commissioner for Energy and the Commissioner for Climate Action, the 65 companies and organisations point to the importance of a 2030 regulatory framework for the entire energy sector in Europe. The group says that having the policy in place would help cut the costs of uncertainty, secure the required funding, shield the environment, trim the costs of decarbonisation and further improve the EU’s technology leadership.
Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS), EDP Renovaveis (ELI:EDPR), French silicon-on-insulator wafers maker Soitec (EPA:SOI), German wind turbine maker Nordex (ETR:NDX1), Danish utility Dong Energy A/S and French heavy engineering group Alstom (EPA:ALO) are among the companies that signed the letter.
“Given the long investment cycles in the energy sector and the fact that investment decisions in the EU’s liberalised energy markets strongly depend on reliability, certainty about the regulatory framework of the next 17 years is needed,” the letter says.
