India greenlights 5 GW of solar PV projects in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh will become home to almost 5 GW of new solar power capacity after the national government gave its approval to eight projects in the Indian state’s Bundelkhand region.

The eight projects will add a combined power generation capacity of 4,995 MW, Shri R K Singh, Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, announced last week.

The list of greenlighted projects includes schemes with individual capacities ranging between 65 MW and 1,200 MW. The largest one is a photovoltaic (PV) complex in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, which will be installed at an investment of INR 48 billion (USD 584m/EUR 537.4m). The proposal was put forward by Bundelkhand Saur Urja (BSUL), a joint venture between Uttar Pradesh Non-Conventional Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) and National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). It will be backed by the government’s Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park (UMREPP) scheme.
