(ADPnews) - Oct 21, 2010 - Swedish home furnishing retailer Ikea said yesterday it had commissioned a 600-kW solar array installed at its store in the US state of Arizona.
The array consists of two 300-kW systems with 2,600 panels spanning a total 75,000-sq-ft (6,967 sq m) at Ikea's site in Tempe. It will generate 1 million kWh of energy a year, enough to supply 84 households, saving 760 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, according to Ikea.
The project was developed and installed by solar equipment maker Gloria Solar.
Ikea said Tempe was its third operational project in the US, after commissioning solar systems in New York's Brooklyn, and Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. The company also plans to install solar systems at eight stores in California and has integrated a geothermal system into an outlet in Centennial, Colorado, which is currently under construction.
