US independent power and gas retailer IGS Energy announced its ambition to become a completely carbon-neutral energy provider by 2040.
The first order of business will be to provide 100% renewable electricity and carbon-neutral natural gas to all new residential consumer starting immediately, IGS Energy said Wednesday.
The Ohio-based company intends to cut direct and indirect emissions from its operation, products and services as much as possible and offset what remains through purchases of carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates (RECs).
IGS Energy will spend the next decade on expanding the product portfolio, shifting to clean energy for home consumers and introducing more sustainable and efficiency-focused products for businesses. It also plans to continue to provide solar power to homes and businesses through development partnerships, it said.
"Energy companies have an obligation to be the driving force toward a sustainable energy future, and this is just one of many actions we are taking to meet that obligation. People want to be responsible energy consumers, and it is incumbent on the industry to give them the resources to take charge of their own energy consumption for energy independence and a healthier planet,” added IGS Energy president and CEO Scott White.
