Jun 20, 2013 - The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) prepares a financial scheme to encourage the development of wind energy in Colombia, local daily Portafolio reported.
The bank wants to provide funding to wind power projects in the private sector, Walter Vergara, chief of sustainable energy and climate change at the bank, said.
Colombia's potential to use wind energy is significant, especially in La Guajira department where it has been estimated at 15 GW, he added.
The country could also develop geothermal energy, especially in the Andes. According to Portafolio, Colombia's government has invested COP 10 billion (USD 5.3m/EUR 4m) in preliminary studies since 2008 to acquire information about the geothermal systems in the country.
