South Australia Premier Steven Marshall was at Port Augusta today to celebrate the start of construction of a 317-MW hybrid wind and solar project, to be owned and operated by Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE).
The Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park will consist of a 210-MW wind farm and a 107-MW solar park. DP Energy, which developed the project, previously said construction would take around 18 months.
Iberdrola was announced as a partner in the project in early 2020, while DP Energy will be involved in it “all the way through construction.” This is the Spanish utility’s first investment in Australia.
“The project's combined solar and wind generation output is expected to closely match South Australia's electricity demand profile which will help place downwards pressure on electricity prices while also assisting with the security and reliability of the grid,” said state energy minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan.
Premier Marshall noted that the Port Augusta renewables complex will also support South Australia’s plans to build an interconnector with New South Wales.
The total investment in the Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park is eatimated at AUD 500 million (EUR 304.6m/USD 358.5m).
