IBC Solar CEO names grid expansion as main reason for renewable energy levy increase

Oct 16, 2012 - Udo Moehrstedt, the CEO of German IBC Solar AG, said in a statement that the grid expansion and not the solar energy boom is the main reason for the notable increase in Germany's renewable energy levy.

However, the head of the German photovoltaic (PV) systems provider, stressed in his statement published on Monday, that the country has to support technologies which will relieve grids. According to Moehrstedt, the sector currently needs energy storage solutions for the solar industry.

Germany's four transmission system operators announced on Monday that the country's renewable energy levy will be raised by 47% on the year to EUR 0.0528 (USD 0.069) per kWh in 2013.

The higher levy, which is being added to electricity prices, will thus result in additional annual costs of almost EUR 60 for households that consume around 3,500 kWh a year, DPA said.

One of the main reasons for the higher levy was said to be the boom of solar energy.
