Group of 409 business leaders asks Trump to have mercy on solar imports

January 25 (Renewables Now) - A group of 409 business owners, investors and other professionals linked to the clean energy industry is urging US President Donald Trump to not levy further tariffs on imported solar modules.

In a letter to the US president, members of environmental advocacy group E2 stress that the Trump administration’s recently announced "safeguard measures" would harm not only the solar industry but possibly many communities.

“You have stated your desire to be the greatest jobs president ever. But a blunt tool like a tariff will hurt, not help, one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Further tariffs will not help our shared goal of growing American jobs,” the letter says.

Trump approved on Monday recommendations to slap solar imports with a safeguard tariff of 30% in the first year, to be reduced to 25% in the second year, 20% in the third and 15% in the fourth. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), this move would cause the loss of some 23,000 American jobs in 2018 alone.
