Google will buy all of the electricity generated by a 30-MW solar park in the Netherlands to power its data centre in Eemshaven under a deal with Dutch utility Eneco, the companies said on Friday.
Google will purchase the output of Sunport Delfzijl for a period of 10 years to help offset the energy consumption of its data centre. The solar farm, said to be largest in the Netherlands, and the data centre are located on the terrain of Groningen Seaports in the Delfzijl port area. Sunport Delfzijl, developed and built by German energy company Wirsol, has been operational since the beginning of 2017.
The agreement represents Google's fourth sustainable energy investment in the Netherlands and its second deal with Eneco.
"We are proud that our data centre in the Eemshaven has been powered by renewable energy since day one thanks to our agreements with Dutch suppliers," said Marc Oman, EU energy lead at Google. "After the agreement with Eneco for the delivery of wind energy from WindPark Delfzijl and the agreements with the wind parks Krammer and Bouwdokken, we are pleased that we can now also make use of solar energy," Oman added.
