German energy company Pfalzwerke AG has signed a deal to supply green hydrogen to powertrain testing company KST Motorenversuch GmbH & Co. KG from a 4-MW electrolyser that it is planning to install in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The electrolyser, to be set up in the town of Bad Duerkheim, will be powered with green electricity, partly produced by Pfalzwerke's own power plants in the region.
Until the electrolyser is built, Pfalzwerke will supply green hydrogen in trailers and store it in tanks. The first supply contract has already been signed, Pfalzwerke said earlier this week.
Should demand for green hydrogen grow, the capacity of the electrolyser could be raised to 10 MW which would result in the production of more than 1,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually.
The clean fuel will be delivered to KST Motorversuch as part of a long-term partnership between the two companies. The Bad Duerkheim-based company specialises in testing and optimising mobility solutions in the automotive industry, such as fuel cells and hydrogen combustion engines before they go into production.
Pfalzwerke's executive Paul Anfang described the deal with KST as the first and decisive step in the production of hydrogen in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Other potential off-takers in the region are Pfalzwerke's subsidiary Pfalzgas GmbH, gas pipeline operator Encevo Deutschland GmbH and public transport company OePNV.
