Germany's development bank KfW will provide EUR 26 million (USD 28.08m) to finance the renovation of hydropower plants in Egypt's Aswan Governorate, the Ministry of International Cooperation of the North African country said today.
An agreement has been signed between Egypt's minister of international cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and Bernd Siegfried, the head of KfW's office in Cairo.
The funding will be used to replace the transformers of the power systems to ensure their maximum utilisation and maintain the efficiency of the hydropower plants in order to benefit from their low operating costs.
Three hydropower plants are currently in operation in Aswan, southern Egypt, with a combined output of 2.65 GW. The facilities supply 7.5 million people with electricity and protect the region from floods.
The financial support is provided as part of a cooperation agreement between the governments of Egypt and Germany. A total of 30 projects in various sectors such as renewable energy, irrigation, sanitation, waste management and others have received financing totalling EUR 1.7 billion.
