Germany continues its ongoing renewable energy expansion as new data reveals the installation of about 1.17 GW of solar, onshore and offshore wind capacity in April.
According to the latest figures released by the Federal Network Agency, a total of 881 MW of solar power capacity was connected to the grid during the month of April. This follows the pattern of previous months, where solar consistently demonstrates its significance in the country's energy transition efforts. Overall, Germany had 71.26 GW of solar systems in operation at the end of April.
Bavaria was once again the uncontested leader with 922 MW of new additions followed by North Rhine-Westphalia with 543 MW and Baden-Wuerttemberg with 516 MW.
More than half, or 500 MW, of the capacity deployed in April, came from subsidised rooftop solar installations, while subsidy-free systems contributed 58.2 MW of the total with ground-mounted parks accounting for 48 MW.
Onshore wind projects contributed 228.7 MW of new capacity during April, while the offshore wind sector also added 66.7 MW. A significant slowdown was observed in the issuance of permits for new onshore wind projects. After giving the green light to 1,077 MW of new capacity in March, Germany granted permits for the installation of only 34 turbines with a combined capacity of 177 MW in April.
