Georgia Power gets approval for 46-MW solar park at military base

US utility Georgia Power has received clearance from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to build a 46-MW solar power plant at the Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) Albany.

The Southern Co (NYSE:SO) subsidiary and the Department of the Navy (DON) are currently finalising project details under a memorandum of understanding (MoU), Georgia Power said on Tuesday.

The MCLB Albany project is the company’s fifth large-scale solar collaboration with the military, it noted. Georgia Power is already working on three 30-MW solar parks at US Army bases near Augusta, Savannah and Columbus, and on another 30-MW solar facility for the DON at SuBase Kings Bay near St Marys.

The utility expects to have over 160 MW of on-base solar power capacity up and running by the end of next year.
