GE Power on Monday said it has signed an agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to extend the Gabal El Zayt substation so that it can connect a further 120 MW of wind power to the grid by the end of 2018.
The substation is the main connection point between the Gabal El Zayt wind farm and the grid, the General Electric Co (NYSE:GE) unit explained. It was first commissioned by GE in 2014 and this will be its second extension, bringing its capacity to 540 MW. There are plans for another 40 MW in the near future.
Mohammed Mohaisen, president and chief executive of GE Power's Grid Solutions business in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, said that GE and EETC continue to work on extensions as the Gabal El Zayt wind farm, one of the largest in the region, expands.
