Nov 22, 2013 - US conglomerate General Electric (NYSE:GE), or GE, said Thursday it had secured orders to supply 545 MW of wind turbines in Brazil as part of a government power auction.
GE will deliver 1.7-100 and 1.85-82.5 turbines to the farms that will be built by Casa dos Ventos, Eletrosul, Contour Global, CEEE, PEC, Rio Energy and Chesf. The 26 wind power facilities will be situated in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia and Piaui. The company will also service the machines for 10 years and provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services under the deal, which includes an availability guarantee, as well.
The US company secured 63% of the total 867 MW of wind capacity in the auction, which was held on November 18. The tender was organised by Brazil's energy sector regulator Aneel. The projects winners will have to start supplying electricity in 2016.
Since August, GE has obtained 1,000 MW of commitments for wind energy as part of power auctions in Brazil. The engineering group, which has 1,000 MW of installed wind power capacity in the South American country, is currently building 400 MW of wind parks there. It has been active in Brazil since 1919.
