Spanish renewable energy group Gamesa (BME:GAM) said today it has deployed and switched on a battery that will store electricity from a 2-MW-plus prototype off-grid system in La Muela, Aragon.
The particular lithium battery has the ability to store 429 kW of power. It was installed as part of an off-grid prototype that consists of a G52-850-kW wind turbine, 245 kWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and three 222-kW diesel generators.
The company's off-grid offering is designed to provide power to remote areas without grid access like islands, mines and rural areas. Following the battery installation, the existing system can generate enough power to meet the energy needs of about 4,000 homes, Gamesa noted.
The prototype uses control software that was custom-developed by Gamesa to facilitate integration of the four power sources.
