July 2 (Renewables Now) - FuelCell Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FCEL) on Thursday said that its 1.4-MW biofuels fuel cell facility in San Bernardino, California, is now operational.

The facility brings the total capacity of FuelCell's generation fleet portfolio to 34 MW.

The SureSource 1500 plant captures methane-rich biogas from the city's anaerobic digester and uses it on-site to produce hydrogen and subsequently renewable power and thermal heat to back the operation of the San Bernardino Municipal Water Department's (SBMWD) water reclamation plant.

The facility will supply SBMWD with clean electricity under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), while the thermal heat will be used to enhance the water treatment process.
