Fraunhofer IST, partners to study green hydrogen production from waste

Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST together with two partners are seeking to develop an alternative process for the production of green hydrogen from organic waste as part of a research project.

The other participants in the project include the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT and Veolia Umweltservice Sued GmbH & Co. KG.

The partners will use organic waste such as sewage sludge as a starting material to produce a hydrogen-rich synthesis gas through a thermo-chemical conversion process. Then, the ultrapure hydrogen will be extracted from the synthesis gas with the help of metal-coated membranes.

The project should help develop a process for decentralised production of ultrapure hydrogen which would support the roll-out of hydrogen in Germany. It would lead to a substantial increase in the domestic production of the clean fuel while reducing the risks related to dependencies, security of supply and reliance on fossil fuels.
