Eni, Uniper to study hydrogen, CCS options in North Wales

Italian oil and gas group Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) last week said its UK unit has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with German energy company Uniper SE (ETR:UN01) to study decarbonisation initiatives in North Wales.

The agreement will aid Uniper in looking into opportunities for producing blue and green hydrogen at its Connah’s Quay power station in Flintshire, with any carbon dioxide (CO2) resulting from the process to be captured.

Meanwhile, Eni UK will transport and store the CO2 in Liverpool Bay, using its infrastructure. The group runs the oil and gas fields in Liverpool Bay and supplies gas from there to the Connah’s Quay power station.

Eni UK’s existing pipeline infrastructure is being remodelled to carry CO2 as part of the company's move into carbon capture and storage (CCS) and the wider HyNet North West low-carbon and hydrogen energy project.
