French energy giant Engie (EPA:ENGI) has ordered a 1 MW/4 MWh grid-scale energy storage system to support a hybrid solar and wind demonstration project developed by the company in Brazil.
The storage facility will be manufactured and supplied by Eos Energy Storage and Northern Power Systems Corp (TSE:NPS), the three companies said on Tuesday. It will be made up of the Eos Aurora battery and Northern Power's FlexPhase power conversion technology and intelligent controls. The battery system will be co-located with more than 5 MW of wind and solar capacities at a medium voltage substation in Tubarao, Brazil. Field installation will be led by Northern Power's engineering design team, with construction to start in the summer.
Raphael Schoentgen, research and technology director at Engie, explained that storage is needed to offer wind and solar as a stable green base load product to clients. "The integrated battery system from Eos and Northern represents a combination of a new promising Zinc based energy storage solution and a new digital based piloting system, which are attractive both from a cost and performance perspective," Schoentgen added.
