Enfinity, Infrabel to build USD-20m solar facility on Belgian rail tunnel
(ADPnews) - Oct 21, 2010 - Belgian PV projects developer Enfinity said today it had agreed with Infrabel, the infrastructure unit of domestic railways SNCB/NMBS to install a USD-20.1-million (EUR 14m) solar system on the roof of a high-speed rail tunnel in northern Belgium.
The facility, which will consist of 16,000 monocrystalline solar panels, will be located on the tunnel along the E19 highway in Belgium. It will produce some 3.3 MWh of power annually, to be used to power both conventional and high-speed trains on the Amsterdam-Brussels-Paris line. It will also supply power to the Antwerp central station.
Installation on the northern side of the tunnel kicked off this summer, while the whole facility is to be up and running in December 2010.
