Wobben WindPower plans to develop a roughly 1-GW wind project in Piaui, the state government announced on Tuesday after a meeting with the company, which produces wind turbine blades, towers and generators in Brazil.
The subsidiary of German wind turbine maker Enercon GmbH will invest BRL 9 billion (USD 2.6bn/EUR 2.3bn) in the project. The wind park will be spread over 21,000 hectares (51,892 acres) in the municipality of Pio IX.
Wobben's president, Fernando Real, said the company has already started the feasibility studies in the region.
Currently, Brazil is the fourth largest wind energy producer in the world and Piaui the fourth largest wind power producer in the country with over 1.6 GW and a prospect of reaching 6 GW in the near future, governor Wellington Dias said.
