Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) announced today its subsidiaries Enel Green Power Italia and Enel Produzione have been awarded 41.2 MW of renewable energy projects in Italy's latest tender.
Of the awarded capacity, 39.9 MW comes from six new solar projects and four refurbishments of already-operational hydropower plants (HPPs). The remaining 1.3 MW is for small-scale solar capacity, including four systems on the roofs of company-owned buildings.
The large solar plants will be built in Emilia-Romagna and Sicily, with the start of construction expected to happen in 2021. The HPP refurbishments in the Piedmont and Veneto regions will be executed between 2021 and 2023.
The auction, the fifth held by the Italian state-owned energy service system operator Gestore dei Servizi Energetici GSE SpA, awarded just 73.7 MW, while it targeted 1,582 MW of capacity.
“The outcome of the fifth GSE auction, with around 5% of available capacity assigned, a project offering significantly lower than the tender volumes and seeing the participation of only a few operators, is the lowest ever recorded,” Enel Green Power CEO and director and head of Enel’s Global Power Generation business line, Salvatore Bernabei, noted.
