Italian energy duo Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) and Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) confirmed today that a joint venture established by them will get public funding approved under the IPCEI Hy2Use project to decarbonise two refineries through the installation of electrolysers.
The JV, called South Italy Green Hydrogen, plans to deploy a 20-MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser at the Eni biorefinery in Gela, Sicily and another one of 10 MW near Eni’s refinery in Taranto, in the Apulia region. The partners have determined that the use of green hydrogen at both sites is the most appropriate solution for their decarbonisation.
Enel and Eni pointed out that the realisation of the projects may be covered by future agreements, to be concluded in compliance with applicable regulations.
As announced last month, the European Commission (EC) approved up to EUR 5.2 billion (USD 5.05bn) in state aid to support renewable and low-carbon hydrogen projects under the IPCEI Hy2USe initiative.
Enel Green Power also secured funding for its partnership with Italian petroleum refiner Saras SpA (BIT:SRS) to install a 20-MW electrolyser in Sardinia.
