Enel breaks ground on over 300-MW solar-plus-storage project in Texas

Italian giant Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL), through Enel Green Power North America, has initiated construction works on the 225-MWp Azure Sky solar project in Texas, it announced on Tuesday.

The power plant, with a direct current (DC) capacity of 284 MW, will be paired with an 81-MW battery system located on an area west of the Dallas-Fort Worth, in Haskell County. This is the developer's second hybrid project in North America.

Enel expects that the solar-plus-storage plant will become operational by summer 2021. Azure Sky will sell a 75-MW portion of its output under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with home improvement retailer Home Depot (BVMF:HOME34).

The solar component of the complex will consist of 700,000 bifacial modules capable of generating 586 GWh of electricity per year and will offset over 386,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.

In July, the Italian group started building its first solar-plus-storage plant in North America. Also located in Texas, the 146-MW/181-MW DC Lily park has a 50-MW battery capable of storing up to 75 MWh.

Enel Green Power plans to install roughly 1 GW of utility-scale wind and solar projects in the US and Canada each year under its three-year strategic plan.
