Eneco Groep NV has joined the NortH2 project that aims to build electrolysers with a green hydrogen production capacity of up to 4 GW in the Netherlands by 2030.
The Dutch power and gas supplier, which seeks to phase out natural gas at customers and in electricity and heat production, will invest hundreds of millions of euros in the initiative which is still in the investigation phase.
”Eneco is striving to be climate neutral by 2035. In order to achieve this goal, in addition to large-scale electrification, we are going to invest in the production and supply of green hydrogen. Our participation in NortH2 is an important step, as this project gives us the opportunity to rapidly scale up the production of green hydrogen in the Netherlands in collaboration with our consortium partners,” said chief executive As Tempelman.
Along with its involvement in NorthH2, Eneco is working on other projects as it targets to build a green hydrogen portfolio of between 1.5 GW and 2 GW.
The NorthH2 initiative was launched by a consortium of Shell Plc (LON:SHEL), Equinor (NYSE:EQNR), RWE AG (ETR:RWE), Gasunie and Groningen Seaports. The partners aim to build up to 4 GW of electrolysis capacity in the port city of Eemshaven on the North Sea coast and the necessary offshore wind capacity by the end of the decade.
The second phase of the feasibility study, which has been recently completed, proved the viability of the project with the planned integration of offshore wind farms, production, storage and distribution of green hydrogen.
