April 8 (Renewables Now) - Spanish utility Endesa SA (BME:ELE) said today that it has signed an agreement to install a 9.2-MW rooftop solar power system for Japanese vehicle parts manufacturer Bridgestone Corp (TYO:5108).
The project is entrusted to the utility's smart energy solutions business Endesa X, which will place more than 20,500 solar panels on top of Bridgestone's factory in the Spanish town of Burgos.
The investment will total over EUR 5 million (USD 5.94m), but it will not require any upfront payment on the part of Bridgestone. The manufacturer will contract the arrays under a 15-year lease, while Endesa X will take care of the project from permitting through commissioning and maintenance.
Once in operation, the 40,000-sq-m (430,556 sq ft) solar farm will substitute 14% of the factory's power consumption with the energy from the sun, Endesa said in the press release.
Endesa X will start the installation process in the coming months, while the customer can expect the system to commence operation by the end of the first half of 2022.
Bridgestone's facilities in Europe already consume 100% renewable power. including the Burgos plant. Instead of buying all of the power it needs, the Burgos facility will produce some itself and serve as model for other Bridgestone plants to follow as part of the Japanese group's sustainability strategy, the utility added.
