Emcore gets USD-5m contract for satellite solar panels
Oct 10, 2012 - US semiconductor company Emcore Corp (NASDAQ:EMKR) today said it had won a contract, valued at about USD 5 million (EUR 3.9m), to produce solar panels for a commercial telecommunications satellite.
The order comes from US aerospace and defense group Alliant Techsystems Inc (NYSE:ATK), or ATK.
The AMOS-6 satellite, manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and operated by Spacecom, is scheduled for launch in early 2015. It will be powered by solar panels using Emcore's ZTJ triple-junction solar cells, which have a sunlight-to-electricity conversion efficiency close to 30%.
Brad Clevenger, general manager of Emcore's Photovoltaics unit, said the contract would reinforce the company's position in the telecom satellite market and enable it to pursue future opportunities in the sector.
