Oslo-based solar-grade silicon maker Elkem Solar said on Friday it intends to reopen next year REC Solar’s 650-MW wafer production facility in Porsgrunn, southern Norway.
Elkem’s plan is to resume production at the site during the first quarter of 2016, it said. In order to do so, the firm will first need to receive the green light from certain local and national authorities.
The particular factory was closed during the second quarter of 2012. Its reopening will create 70-80 job positions along with a dozen indirect jobs, Elkem noted.
The Norway-based unit of Chinese-owned Bluestar Elkem Investment Co Ltd completed a takeover of REC’s solar operations in May 2015 for a total consideration of some NOK 4.3 billion (USD 519m/EUR 466m).
