October 6 (Renewables Now) - Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina SA (EGE Haina) announced on Thursday it has started the construction of a 48.3-MW wind farm in Dominican Republic.
Located in Barahona province, the Larimar 2 plant is the company's fourth wind farm and it is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018. It will be comprised of 14 wind turbines supplied by Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS), EGE Haina stated.
Spanish infrastructure and energy group Elecnor SA (BME:ENO) will be the general contractor in charge of the construction work.
EGE Haina president Edgar Pichardo said that Larimar 2 will increase the national wind capacity by 36%, which will consolidate the country's leadership in wind generation in the Caribbean.
When Larimar 2 is completed, EGE Haina will have delivered 175 MW of wind power to the Dominican Republic grid and have an overall investment in its four parks of more than USD 400 million (EUR 342.1m), the firm noted.
