Ecuador completes wind studies on Garcia Moreno project

Aug 1, 2014 - Ecuador has completed a campaign of wind studies in the northern Carchi province as part of its Garcia Moreno wind power project, which could generate nearly 110 MWh a year, the institute for pre-investment studies INP said yesterday.

Spanish company Gas Natural Fenosa (BME:GAS), contracted by INP to study the feasibility of the project at a cost of USD 860,000 (EUR 642,000), mulls over 20 wind turbines and a net power output of 111.6 MWh a year, based on preliminary results.

The wind measurements took place in two areas, San Isidro and Garcia Moreno, during 12 months and showed positive results only for the second area, confirming the viability of wind power generation, INP said.

The remaining geological, geotechnical and other studies and evaluations should conclude in September.

Ecuador already has the Villonaco wind park in the southern Loja province with an installed capacity of 16.5 MW.
