June 6 (SeeNews) - Israeli company Eco Wave Power Ltd officially launched its 100-kW wave power system in Gibraltar last week.

The facility is now exporting power to Gibraltar's grid under a commercial power purchase agreement (PPA) with Gibraltar Electric Authority, Gibraltar's national electric company.

According to the company, this is the first wave energy array to be connected to an electricity grid in Europe.

Design work has started on the wave power plant's expansion to 1 MW and 5 MW, which will feature larger generators, the company said.

Eco Wave Power has been developing its technology since 2011. Its floaters move up and down with the movement of the waves, creating pressure that is driving a hydro motor and a generator.

The firm has received an EU co-funded grant for the 5-MW project on the Ammunition Jetty.
