Dubai to study 400-MW Arabian Gulf pumped hydro storage project

January 16 (Renewables Now) - The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will assess the economic and environmental feasibility of building a huge 400-MW pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) island in the Arabian Gulf.

The storage capacity would be around 2,500 MWh.

DEWA said today it will partner with Dredging, Environmental & Marine Engineering Group (DEME) of Belgium and the GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) to study the energy storage project. The parties have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for it at the World Future Energy Summit 2018.

In 2017 the public service infrastructure company announced another 250-MW PHES project in Dubai, which is to use the existing Hatta Dam. An upper reservoir will be constructed in the mountain. The pumps will be powered by electricity from solar panels.

Both energy storage projects would support Dubai’s plan to become “a global hub for clean energy and green economy” and to bring the share of clean energy in its power mix to 75% by 2050.
