The US Department of the Navy (DON) said on Tuesday it has teamed up with a unit of energy producer and distributor Dominion (NYSE:D) to build an 18-MW solar power facility at a military airport in Virginia.
The plant, the direct current (DC) capacity of which amounts to 21 MW, will be constructed at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana in Virginia Beach.
Dominion Virginia Power will build, own, operate and maintain the solar park for a period of 37 years. The company intends to request an approval of the project by the Virginia State Corporation Commission this summer. Completion is scheduled for late 2017.
This is the second such project that resulted from a collaboration between the Navy and Dominion. Last September the DON agreed to buy 25 MW DC of solar power over a period of 10 years to cover about 6% of Naval Station (NS) Norfolk's electricity needs.
