The US Department of Energy (DOE) will provide USD 750 million (EUR 706.1m) in funding to support research and development (R&D) initiatives aiming to significantly lower the cost of producing clean hydrogen, the federal government agency said on Wednesday.
The funding opportunity is part of the first USD-1.5-billion phase of a USD-8-billion hydrogen hub programme authorised by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The scheme was launched in the summer of 2022 to back the US’ goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The USD-750-million package will be made available to projects involved in the research, development and demonstration of technologies. The financial assistance awards will be granted in the form of cooperative agreements for a period of between two and five years.
Interested parties will be able to apply through a two-phase process. They are invited to submit concept papers by April 19, 2023, while full applications are due by July 19, 2023.
The first part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law envisages allocating USD 1 billion for R&D related to clean hydrogen produced via electrolysis. The remaining USD 500 million will be disbursed to conduct research on improved processes and technologies for manufacturing and recycling clean hydrogen systems and materials.
