US "local solar" developer Cypress Creek Renewables today cut the ribbon on a 9-MW solar installation in Maryland.
Located in Frederick County, the Baker Point solar array uses 34,074 solar modules and is expected to produce enough power per year to meet the needs of more than 2,000 homes.
Cypress Creek said this is the first project inspired by Maryland's legislation supporting pollinator-friendly solar sites. It hosts honey-producing hives and has been seeded with nine species of native flowers and warm-season grasses.
The electricity generated will be purchased by National Geographic and Monumental Sports through a long-term contract with WGL Energy Services Inc. OneEnergy Renewables is behind the initial concept for the project.
"The offsite solar project celebrated today represents a breakthrough model for renewable energy customers that will continue to attract organizations such as arenas, ballparks and corporations facing onsite installation obstacles that can now switch to solar, reduce their carbon footprint and support the environment," said Louis Hutchinson, WGL vice president and chief revenue officer.
