US power technology company Cummins Inc (NYSE:CMI) on Monday said it will set up its first US electrolyser production facility in Fridley, Minnesota, which will have an initial manufacturing capacity of 500 MW a year with a potential for a scale-up to 1 GW.
Part of the company’s existing Fridley plant will be used for the production of electrolysers, initially its HyLYZER-500 and HyLYZER-5000 proton exchange membrane (PEM) systems.
The move to expand Cummins’ electrolyser manufacturing footprint to the US reflects "increasing government support through the Inflation Reduction Act, Hydrogen Hubs and a blossoming hydrogen economy in the states," said Alexey Ustinov, vice president of electrolysers.
The company recently said it will expand its PEM electrolyser production capacity in Belgium to 1 GW. It has also added space to its site in Mississauga, Canada and is building new electrolyser factories in Spain and China.
“The company continues to evaluate new opportunities to grow in North America that will enable us to extend our electrolyser product range and manufacture next-generation technologies for larger, more demanding applications,” according to Alex Savelli, managing director of electrolysers – Americas at Cummins.
