Cummins, Sinopec to set up 500-MW electrolyser factory in China

US power solutions company Cummins Inc (NYSE:CMI) has set up a 50/50 joint venture (JV) with China Petrochemical Corp, or Sinopec Group, to produce green hydrogen generation systems in China.

The JV, announced in December, will at first invest USD 47 million (EUR 41.5m) in a factory for the production of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers that will have an annual capacity of 500 MW when completed in 2023, with plans to be expanded to 1 GW over the next five years.

The JV is called Cummins Enze Guangdong Hydrogen Technology Co Ltd, or Cummins Enze, and is located in Foshan in China’s Guangdong Province.

Cummins has a footprint in China that includes 30 facilities, among which 21 manufacturing sites.

Sinopec, a substantial hydrogen energy supplier in China, in November announced the start of construction of a green hydrogen production complex in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region that will feature a 300-MW solar power plant.
