Colombia to launch solid waste power plant on San Andres island in Sep

Jul 17, 2012 - Colombia will launch a power plant to generate electricity from solid waste on the San Andres island in September, the first plant that will use this technology in the country, mines and energy minister Mauricio Cardenas said yesterday.
The plant will produce 2 MWh and represents a solution to the environmental problem with the waste on San Andres, Cardenas said. Similar projects could be developed in other parts of Colombia that need alternative sources of power generation, he added.
The plant was built by local power firm Eedas, which is also studying a wind power project of 7.5 MW on the island.
The electricity consumed by San Andres costs COP 120 billion (USD 67.4m/EUR 54.8m) a year, of which COP 90 billion is paid by the government. During a visit to the island, Cardenas said that the state wants to maintain the subsidies but to avoid a waste of electricity.
