September 21 (Renewables Now) - Chilean electric utility Colbun SA said Tuesday that it has approved to begin construction of its Horizonte wind farm project in Chile’s region of Antofagasta, finally settling on 778 MW of installed capacity.

The Horizonte project was initially envisioned as a 607-MW scheme, but then Colbun sought and recently secured the environmental approval to erect an up to 980-MW wind farm.

In a bourse filing this morning Chilean time, Colbun said it intends to invest USD 850 million (EUR 725.3m) in the now 778-MW project.

The Horizonte wind farm will still feature 140 turbines, as approved by the Antofagasta environmental authority. If the turbine supply option with Germany’s Enercon GmbH is still in place, the turbine maker will be delivering a set of earthquake-proof machines, per its exclusivity agreement signed with Colbun in 2019.

Colbun did not give exact details on when the construction would start, but said that Horizonte is expected to commence operations in 2024.
