Philippine renewable energy firm Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) has kicked off the construction of a 680-MW solar park project in Luzon, the Philippines’ largest and most populous island.
The company broke ground on what is the largest project in its portfolio on Tuesday. The required investment is estimated at PHP 21.6 billion (USD 397.1m/EUR 365.7m).
To be located in the municipality of Tuy, Batangas province, the photovoltaic (PV) park will be installed in two phases over the next two years, covering 5 million square metres (53.8m square feet) of land. It is planned to begin commercial operations in 2024.
Local infrastructure services provider Megawide Construction Corp and Citicore Construction Inc will take care of the plant’s construction and commissioning. The construction stage is expected to open at least 2,400 jobs, most of which will be sourced locally.
“CREC is committed to invest and develop more solar plants in the long run and help expand the country’s total renewable energy capacity,” said CREC's president and CEO Oliver Tan. He highlighted that the company has boosted its solar project pipeline by over three times, to 5 GW from 1.5 GW previously.
