China's H1 PV deployments slightly down to 24.3 GW

August 10 (Renewables Now) - The Chinese solar power industry deployed 24.3 GW of capacity in the first half of 2018, just slightly down from 24.4 GW in the year-ago period, shows data by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA).

The new capacity additions brought China’s cumulative installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity to 154.51 GW, including 112.6 GW of utility-scale and 41.9 GW of distributed generation (DG) plants.

The bulk of the newly commissioned capacity in the January-June period came from the DG segment with 12.24 GW of facilities, representing a year-on-year increase of 72%. Meanwhile, installations in the utility-scale sector dropped by 30% as new plants brought online totalled 12.06 GW.

According to Asia Europe Clean Energy (Solar) Advisory (AECEA), the Asian country will put on stream between 30 GW and 35 GW of new PV capacity this year, which is lower than its earlier guidance for deployments of 40 GW-45 GW. Last year, China had a record year after adding a whopping 53.06 GW of PV capacity, while in 2018 overall installations are seen to drop following a government decision for a 10-GW cap on DG projects and new policies to cut feed-in tariffs (FiT) for the second half of 2018.
