April 26 (Renewables Now) - Chile-based Latin American power company AES Gener will be known as AES Andes SA going forward.

The proposal to change the name was approved at an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on Friday, the company said.

AES Andes will give more details on the new name and corporate identity at its first AES Week, an events session taking place on May 4 and May 5.

The company is part of US group AES Corp (NYSE:AES), which owns the largest piece of the share capital. It generates and sells electricity in Chile, Argentina and Colombia.

At the shareholders’ meeting, CEO Ricardo Falu highlighted the company's progress in realising its customer-centric green energy Greentegra strategy.

“With the achievements to date, we have ensured our transformation, increasing our renewable capacity by 165% by 2024 and accelerating the closure of the coal-fired plants to the earliest date that the system allows, after fulfilling our contractual commitments,” Falu was quoted as saying.
