US power utility CenterPoint Energy Inc (NYSE:CNP) has received regulatory approval to buy a 300-MW solar park in Indiana and sign an off-take deal for 100 MW of solar power capacity in the same state.
The green light was given to the company’s CenterPoint Energy Indiana South unit by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The utility said on Wednesday that the two arrangements align with its renewables commitment and 2035 net-zero goal, both part of its long-term electric generation transition plan.
More specifically, CenterPoint has struck a deal to buy a 300-MW wind project in Indiana’s Posey County that will be built by Arevon Energy Management. The latter is co-developing the project together with Tenaska. The wind park is slated to begin operations by 2023 and generate enough electricity to cover the consumption of over 50,000 homes per year.
Separately, the utility has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to get electricity from 100 MW of solar capacity coming from a 200-MW project being developed by US solar and storage developer Clenera LLC. The plant in Southwestern Indiana’s Warrick County will be commissioned by 2023. CentrPoint's contract will be valid for 25 years.
