Carlton Power secures consent for 200-MW green hydrogen project in UK

UK energy infrastructure developer Carlton Power Ltd has obtained planning permission for its 200-MW Trafford green hydrogen project in Greater Manchester.

The green light from Trafford Council makes the project the largest consented green hydrogen scheme in the UK, the company said today in a Linkedin post.

The GBP-300-million (USD 336m/EUR 345m) project is located in the developer’s Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park. It is dependent on receiving support from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS) hydrogen investment package, the developer said.

The project’s first phase will be of 15 MW-20 MW. It is expected to create some 200 jobs during a two-year constriction period and up to 10 full-time operational jobs. Future phases will be added in line with demand in the region.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham commented that the project will aid industry and transport operators in the region in accelerating their plans to use green hydrogen and meet their net zero targets, while stimulating jobs and supporting renewable energy investment.

Carlton Power is advancing the project with local partners -- the Manchester Metropolitan University, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Trafford Council, Cadent Gas Ltd and Electricity North West. Its Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park will also feature a li-ion battery energy storage scheme and a liquid air storage plant.
