California's Glendale inks renewables PPA for 146 GWh/yr- report

Sep 26, 2014 - The city of Glendale in California has struck a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for 146,000 MWh of renewable power per year, to start coming from a solar park in Nevada as early as end-2015.

The deal with Skylar Resources LP has been given the green light unanimously at a City Council meeting on Tuesday.

The Glendale News-Press said that the contract involves about 50% renewable and 50% non-renewable power. The annual payments are starting at USD 78.65 (EUR 61.7) per MWh and will be rising by no more than 1.95% annually, over the agreed 25 years.

The solar plant, details on which were not disclosed, is expected to start power generation as early as end-2015 and allow Glendale to meet California’s requirements for renewable energy use, Steve Zurn, Glendale Water & Power manager, was cited as saying. It is possible that the start of power supply be put off for January 2017.

At the council meeting, Zurn also noted that the PPA does not involve additional costs for the utility’s budget, since the San Juan coal-fired power plant will be shut down in 2017.
