Scottish firm BWE Partnership said today it is set to start work on a 5-MW solar park in Angus, eastern Scotland.
The company received full planning permission for the Kinblethmont solar park from the local council last month and is to kick off construction in early December. This is BWE Partnership's second solar park project. Ron Shanks, the company's owner, said that construction of its first commercial solar farm, a 9.5-MW scheme in Angus, was well underway.
The 5-MW ground-mounted project, on farm land within Kinblethmont estate near Arbroath, is expected to produce enough energy to power some 3,500 homes.
BWE Partnership said continues looking for land for large solar developments in eastern Scotland. The company has a pipeline totalling over 70 MW.
The Scottish government has recently announced it would keep the grandfathering guarantee for solar projects below 5 MW in the Renewables Obligation. The UK government wants to axe this. "So to maintain a consistency and certainty for a growing industry, I have decided to use the powers I have to retain the status quo until the closure of the Renewables Obligation in April 2016," Scottish energy minister Fergus Ewing has said in a statement.
