Bulgaria opens EUR 123m home solar scheme to applications

Bulgaria’s energy ministry on Tuesday said that a scheme to support the installation of photovoltaic (PV) systems by households is now open to applications.

The launch of the scheme follows final approval by the European Commission.

The initiative is part of Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. It is worth a total of BGN 240 million (USD 134m/EUR 123m), with BGN 140 million coming from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility and BGN 100 million being national and private co-financing.

The first phase of the programme will allocate BGN 80 million.

The scheme will finance the installation of PV systems of up to 10 kWp, which could include batteries, covering up to 70% of the costs, but not more than BGN 15,000. It will also support the installation of solar water heating systems, meeting 100% of the costs, up to BGN 1,960.83.

The deadline for applications is November 10. The government will then rank the projects.

To be able to participate households need to use inefficient heat sources powered by solid fuels such as wood and coal.

The ministry launched a consultation on the measure at the end of 2022.
