Britishvolt Ltd has shortlisted two possible locations for the construction of a 30-GWh-plus lithium ion battery factory and is leaning towards Bro Tathan in South Wales, the company announced on Friday.
According to the announcement, Britishvolt has considered 42 locations in the UK.
“After six months of careful analysis, Bro Tathan is the preferred choice due to a number of different factors. The Welsh Government has welcomed us with open arms and impeccable due diligence, and the region meets crucial criteria including import/export accessibility, availability of labour and skilled staff, along with convenient geographical proximity to customers and local industrial companies,” said Lars Carlstrom, CEO at Britishvolt.
The plan includes building a solar power plant to support the battery production process and ensure a near carbon neutral electricity input.
Britishvolt expects the initial project investment of about GBP 1.2 billion (USD 1.5bn/EUR 1.34bn) to create at least 3,500 jobs. Lars notes that the local ecosystem for the wider supply chain will range from 10,000 to 15,000 jobs.
The first stage of the so-called GigaPlant should be fully functional by the third quarter of 2023.
