Aug 28, 2013 - Brazil's wind turbine blades and ventilation systems producer Tecsis, which in the past has relied on exports, decided to shift focus to Brazil amid the expansion of the country's wind power market, the president of administrative board, Percio de Souza, said.
Previously, Tecsis exported its production to the United States and Europe.
According to Souza, now Brazil accounts for 40% of its total sales but it has the potential to account for 50% by 2016. The focus on Brazil forms part of Tecsis' strategy to return to profit after the global financial crisis, which made the company to post BRL 136 million (USD 57.3m/EUR 42.9m) loss in 2008.
Now, the company produces 6,000 turbine blades per year and its sales reached BRL 1.3 billion in 2012. Next year, Tecsis will launch its 12th plant in Brazil's Northeast, to require BRL 250 million investments. The plant's output will meet the domestic demand. Also, the producer mulls over the opening of a facility outside Brazil in order to cut exports costs.
Last week, Brazilian government held a wind power auction, where 66 projects with combined capacity of 1.5 GW were contracted. By 2017, the wind power is expected to account for 6% of Brazil's energy mix, versus the current 2%.
